The Trek is a graphic novel that explores the relationships between people in a close-knit community that becomes disrupted. The story takes place over a five-day pioneer trek, an event organized by 16-year-old Codey's local church. Codey is annoyed to spend the last days of summer break in hot and dusty Wyoming, re-enacting the journey of the Mormon handcart pioneers. In the midst of this, she is having a crisis of faith which threatens her connection to the only community she has ever known. My project explores the struggle to find belonging and acceptance when we feel like our personal identity stands in conflict to the community that we’re part of.
